Each one has an acetate for that color and when they are combined with the black and white acetate , the way the human brain perceives the image, a wide variety of colors appear. The color separation (or color proof) was created to show the publisher what the actual, printed version of the comic would ultimately look like (so, if any corrections were required, they would be caught before the books went to press).
