The advent of computers, the coloring of comic books and, for that matter, magazines, newspapers, etc. Regardless of however many colors appeared to the eye, were made up of tiny dots of four colors – yellow, blue (cyan), red (magenta) and black. The color separation (or color proof) was created to show the publisher what the actual, printed version of the comic would ultimately look like (so, if any corrections were required, they would be caught before the books went to press).
